friday update: lots of things!

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

there are lots of things to update you on from the past week!

first up, i realized i haven’t updated all the lucy fans in a while! well, she’s doing great with the change in the weather. lu loves to nap on deck in the sun, and alternate that with naps in her bed in my studio. today i had scheduled an easy hike with a friend and the radio flyer wagon for lucy, but it’s raining so we’ve rescheduled. above is lucy’s reaction: yes, she’s pouting!

it’s ok. there’s plenty of work to be done around here! above is a quick screen shot of one of the garden posters i’m prepping for the printer in advance of my show at farm cafe here in portland later in the month. the farm is one of my favorite restaurants in town – it specializes in fresh, local and organic farm-to-table menus. a great place to present the weekly seed-to-harvest drawings i did of my garden vegetable plants last summer! i believe the posters will be up at the restaurant july 17th to mid august!

we had our weekly elemental show meeting earlier in the week [another work in progress shot above], and so many pieces are finishing up and looking awesome! sure, there are some slightly dud pieces too, but all in all working on a show with 4 other people has been an amazing experience! this show opens at together gallery on july 29th.

lastly, i got new-to-me flatfile drawers last weekend at a yard sale! $100, what a steal! my new intern, dan, and i set them up yesterday. i was so excited to find blond wood ones – so much nicer than my old grey metal ones.

but these wood ones have a moldy smell i can’t seem to get rid of. i doused them with febreeze a few days ago, resulting in a mold+febreeze smell. at the moment i have the drawers filled with baking powder and coffee grounds, which i saw online. so now they smell like mold-febreeze-coffee. argh. they look good though! anyone have any other suggestions? i can’t have my artwork smelling like mold-febreeze-coffee!

amazing! i found this on flickr while searching for beets to draw for a current project [more on that later]. with beets on the brain, i had to have the beet tartare at portobello last night. also amazing!

visit the design sponge blog today to see my go-to social gathering recipe: sushi rolls! once you get the hang of it, they’re super easy to make and everyone is always so impressed!

later this summer i hope to feature some fruit sushi recipes – i’m testing them now!

salmon

i finally downloaded the pictures from the other weekend when my friend emily came up from l.a. for the weekend with one request: “i want to see The Nature.” so i took her to multnomah falls. we were so so lucky to see the salmon making their way upstream from the pacific ocean towards the falls to spawn! that’s what the crappy photo above is about. although i don’t understand how they expect to get up that waterfall!

i scored bonus points because apparently the bridge and falls are in the vampire movies everyone except me seems to be into right now.

mshrms

as always, i was more interested in documenting the many amazing small worlds of moss and mushrooms along the trails.

grapepie

concord grape pie?! yup. and YUM!

a gaggle of us girls got together on saturday to process about 30 pounds of concord grapes from someone’s yard into jelly and wondered what else we could make. grape pie was the answer!

we also experimented with making grape mixed cocktails. somehow the combination of fresh concord grape juice, vodka, seltzer and sugar makes the outside edge of your top lip burn. weird, but true. all of us experienced it!

grapejelly

oh yeah, and we also made oodles of grape jelly. guess what everyone’s getting for the holidays…

cans

not much going on in the studio this week, so i’m taking the opportunity to clean the studio, prepare for upcoming projects, and can some of my garden bounty.

oh, here’s a little something: my work has been featured over on the williamette week blog this week. thanks, retail therapist!

10cart

today i got up at first light to pack everyone’s orders, biked to the post office, then hopped in a friend’s car to go to a farm on sauvie island, just outside of portland, for the day. our mission: to gather the last of the berries for the season and any other fruit for a huge canning session tomorrow.

it was hot, sweaty, thorny work. i can’t believe i used to harvest all day everyday in august when i was a kid on our farm! these u-pick-it farms are a brilliant idea from the farmer’s point of view!

06berryhands

highlights were picking raspberries in the shade of an old oak tree after spending a few hours in full sun picking other berries, grasping for a raspberry on the vine and almost grabbing a baby frog perched on a leaf next to it instead, standing in the way of the sprinklers several times, and, of course, our final haul of fruit!

just wait to see what we make of all this tomorrow!

garden

not sure if anyone’s noticed that i haven’t drawn my garden’s progress in several weeks. sigh. i was too busy with a handful of big projects that wrapped up last week. so, this was the week i was going to get out into the garden with my sketchbook. instead, we had the crazy heatwave that kept me hiding in the basement and left a swath of dead dehydrated plants in it’s wake.

we lost the entire lettuce patch, the second round of chard and spinach, and most of the tomatoes ripe so far are black on the bottoms. sigh again. there are a few new crops this week though: a handful of purple greenbeans, oregon peas, carrots, and one lone tomato sans black bottom.

aren’t these the most amazing leaves you’ve ever seen? this is the newest plant in my studio, given to me last week by a friend moving across the country. i walk up to it and stare at it several times a day and tell it what pretty leaves it has, and that i want to draw it as soon as i’m not so crazy busy. it bloomed a few days ago [see the small purple bloom in the upper right?], which my moving friend jealously told me it has never done for her. obviously it likes being talked to and admired!

this is just a stall tactic to keep myself from telling you about all the amazing things i’m working on in my studio at the moment. just wait, just wait… august and september will be good! but right now there aren’t enough hours in the day!
