take a gander at my new wheels! no, it’s not a mercedes like i originally thought i wanted, but my new ride has been reliably maintained and will get me to sales events and the coast and forest for camping research projects.

thank you thank you thank you to everyone who helped me with my car-getting project!!! my belief in asking for what you need and then maintaining positive thoughts has been renewed!

see all of you in the bay area at renegade in sf in december!

camp02

took part in a last-minute camping trip to southern washington this past weekend. i needed to do some creekside research for a current project. everything else was bonus!

camp09

these are the times my job rules!
camp18

the entire weekend was ideal: clear skies with full sun [day] and stars [night], the leaves were turning, beautiful scenery and hikes, good company.

car craving

email_wagon

yes, after 15 car-free years i’ve realized i need occassional wheels to get myself to the coast or the forest for in-person research, and to get me and my goods to more sales events to see more of you in person more often.

in a perfect world i’d get an electric car, but their range won’t get me to the coast yet. so, after lots of research, i’ve decided to get a vintage [bio]diesel 300 TD mercedes station wagon in the meantime.

now i just need to raise the funds – about $5000 – and find a wagon in solid condition here in the pacific northwest. can all this happen in the next two weeks? october 9 is the deadline to commit to a spot at the december renegade craft fair in san francisco – a perfect inaugural trip.

with your help anything is possible! all money i’m able to make and collect in the next few weeks will go towards the car and sales events fund. if any of you know of a wagon for sale, let me know! wouldn’t a white one be tempting to draw on?

here are some things to tempt you to help out with this endeavor…
my online shop
my etsy shop – new original art added!
custom commissions
olio/plywerk art pieces

thanks in advance for your help!

llww

life long work week aka jesse and chad aka “the boys in the window” [that's what i called them all week!] busted their butts and screenprinted a bunch of posters. this is the only photo that didn’t get corrupted in my batch!

mana

best fair food ever… mana food bar! their spicy brown rice and mushroom sliders were amazing. even more amazing was their whole menu, i still remember dinner there last week:
* thai watermellon salad with cucumbers, spicy green chili, mint and lime.
* rice in a thai coconut milk broth with butternut squash, yellow tofu, basil, mint and green onion.
yum. i’ll try to replicate them here at home.

plural

there were quite a few stellar poster makers at the fair, plural lured me into their tent with their black and white wrapping paper/posters and a stack of $5 misprinted screenprinted posters! plus, i’d seen them earlier in the week at the show tell show presenting a window project they did cataloging all the objects in the whistler bar. flat black shapes grouped together in a line, it was very brittany powell!

the show tell show is a great concept – an evening of art and design nerds presenting their work. i wonder if there’s anything similar here in portland that i just don’t know about?

olio plywerk artist series!

Friday, September 18th, 2009

just made public…

olioplywerk

i’m honored to be one of the two inaugural artists in the olio/plywerk artist series. i haven’t seen these in person yet, but knowing the ladies of olio and the guys/girls at plywerk, i know the craftsmanship on these bamboo-mounted prints will be meticulous!

choose from nine of my original illustrations, each will be archivally printed and mounted on an 8″×8″ bamboo plywerk panel with a matte finish. each panel has a keyhole slot on the back for easy hanging. extremely limited edition of 5 prints, and an authenticity card will be included.

…oh! for those of you waiting for my last installment of the renegade review, i know. i haven’t forgotten! still working on gathering all the photos! it’s been a hectic week of catch up! sorry!…

smobject02

yay! i remember when the small object started and it’s been awesome to watch sarah’s business grow and progress through the years.

smobject01

we’ve been emailing forever, and this was our opportunity to finally meet in person!

smobject03

sadly, her tent was clear on the other side of the fair, which was ginormous, so i only got a super-quick look at her complete collection of wares and said a quick hello. i also love all her new paper goods for chronicle books!

kstudio

then there’s k studio [above]! shelly and her mom and i have crossed paths several times over the years in new york for the stationery show [me] and the concurrent international contemporary furniture fair [them]. their booth is always one of my favorites to visit at the icff and it was neat to see them at renegade, and with smaller items for sale.

all their items are meticulously made and beautiful in their simplicity. remember my brief foray into custom illustrated embroidered goods? that was with an old k studio embroidery machine i bought from them when they upgraded to a primo system!

owly1

owly shadow puppets! ok, not only are andrea’s laser-cut shadow puppets and kits amazing, but she also does a snarky valentine’s collection that cracks me up. smart humor + meticulous craftsmanship gets me every time.

il_430xn55610350

apparently one of these has made it’s way to the white house…
il_430xn89630580

more smart humor and meticulous craftsmanship…

itsokadia01

sighn is my new craft-crush of this trip. i’d seen his “its ok” pieces online and thought they were interesting, but once i saw a few of his pieces around amy and dawn’s apartment i was impressed. then dawn tells me they’re not laser-cut but done one by one with a scroll saw. what?! all new respect. the little orange lettered piece below is 2″ x 3″!!!

itsokadia02

saturday morning i marched up to the itsokadia booth to introduce myself and take photos. even cooler, i got to invade his studio that night and see and learn more about his whole process, camera in hand, as well as meet his wife and dog! i’ve posted my sighn studio tour on flickr.

essimar21

i’ve long admired essimar’s paper goods on etsy and was thrilled to be 2 tents away from her tables at renegade. she cuts all her stuff by hand, that crazy girl.

essimar1

i went over so many times to marvel over and buy her delicate handcut, painted and screnprinted items that she threatened to cut me off!

randl

even more long-admired are chika and jean’s meticulously created wallets and paper cozies. although they live in seattle, three hours away from me in portland, we’ve never met. it took all of us traveling to chicago to meet!

randl2

i’m especially fond of their fabric collaborations with slowloris, another washinton state wonder i’ve been collecting shirts from for years. chika, jean and i got to talking… and there just might be a randl/jill bliss collaboration sometime soon! look out!
